BARCELONA, Spain Only two Americans - lightweight Oscar De LaHoya and middleweight Chris Byrd - reached the boxing finals. De LaHoya won. Byrd lost.

It was the worst showing for a U.S. Olympic boxing team in morethan 30 years.

And there were lots of excuses. But in the end, the Cubans,who advanced nine fighters to the finals, were too good.

Also, many of the Americans appeared baffled by the newcomputer-based scoring system that discouraged body-punching.
