MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES RELEASES UPGRADED INTERNET MAPPING APPLICATION

ANNAPOLIS, Md., March 9 -- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources issued the following news release:

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has released a new version of its Internet mapping application, MERLIN Online.

MERLIN (Maryland's Environmental Resources and Land Information Network) has been in use at DNR since 1999 and was Maryland's first Internet mapping application. It has recently been redesigned to take advantage of new technology.

"DNR has long been a leader in using mapping technologies in Maryland to better understand problems and their solutions," said Kenny Miller, Maryland's geographic information officer. "MERLIN Online represents the next step in leveraging the existing MD IMap assets (http//:www.imap.maryland.gov) developed to support Governor O'Malley's vision for improved decision making and transparency in government."

MERLIN Online allows a user to create a map for any location in Maryland, including their choice of base map and user selectable data. Users can point to a location on the map and receive information about that site. Another powerful feature of the system is access to information that helps to better understand the data being viewed, such as the origin of the data, how it was created, accuracy and age.

Other features include measuring tools, a map legend, hyperlinks from data layers to other web pages, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and a Help Guide that can be printed to assist a user as they learn to navigate through the system. Users must have a current web browser with Adobe Flash Player installed.

MERLIN Online was developed for internal and external customers because everyone is "hungry" for maps to help make better, informed decisions. Promoting MERLIN Online supports the Department's mission, provides for wise economic development in Maryland and promotes stewardship of our natural resources.
